This is the Breguet Classique Chronograph reference 3237. While Breguet may not be the first brand mentioned by collectors today, the brand has one of the strongest legacies when it comes to watchmaking. Originally established in the late 18th century, Louis Breguet was an early adopter of the steel hands with circle motifs, the curved numerals and the guilloche pattern on the dial. The design language is distinctive even up till today. The “Souscription”, a single-hand pocket watch, is one of the most important and famous pocket watches in history. In the early 19th century, Louis Breguet invented the Tourbillion to counteract the effects of gravity and it remains as one of the most sought after complications even today.

Powered by the era-defining Lemania 2310, the movement is not only crucial to the demand of the 3237 but for horology as a whole due to its utilization at the heart of the Quartz crisis. The ebauche was also used by similar chronographs during that period such as the Patek Philippe 5070, the Roger Dubuis Sympathie and the Vacheron Constantin 47101, each carrying equal importance to the respective brands.

With a wearable 37mm case, the 3237 features many design elements that have come to define Breguet and is still utilised today such as the hand-engraved guilloche dial, coin-edge case and Breguet-style hands. As denoted by the “7” in the reference, the watch features a sapphire caseback that displays the Lemania 2310 column wheel chronograph movement which is hand-finished with a swan neck regulator. As a sidenote, the earlier pieces held the 3230 reference which had both display and closed caseback and the references ending with 7 were introduced to differentiate the casebacks. In addition, this particular 3237 is cased in platinum. While there have been no production numbers revealed, history denotes that platinum variants are the least produced and is a highly-sought after case material.

While Breguets have traditionally been fairly undervalued considering the historical significance and fine watchmaking associated with the brand, it is encouraging to see that the brand has seen somewhat of a renaissance with greater depth and understanding of not just the brand’s legacy but also, of horology as a whole and the value that lies within the Breguets from this time period.
