This is the Cartier Tank Louis reference WGTA0121. The history of the Cartier Tank is one that barely needs any introduction, given that it has been covered excessively. The origins of the Tank began in 1917, inspired by war machines of the same name. Given the success of the original Tank, Cartier began to vary the types of Tank to leverage on the success of the model. Among the many Cartier timepieces, the Tank is arguably their most recognizable model alongside the Santos.

Being a highly popular and identifiable model from Cartier, it’s no surprise that the Tank has been the model with the most variations since its introduction. An icon that put the brand on the map, it remains one of the most noteworthy time-only pieces even today.

In 2023, Cartier quietly introduced a special Tank Louis Cartier exclusive to the European market with the WGTA0121 to celebrate the brand's 170th anniversary of watchmaking. A modestly-sized Tank by today's standards, the reference features a blue Art Deco style dial in a platinum case. While Cartier Tanks have traditionally been associated with Roman numerals, the limited edition applies a distinctive geometric style font for the numerals on varying shades of blue.

Despite the classic proportions of the case, the dial renders the reference decidedly modern. As with platinum models, the reference is marked by a ruby cabochon. A highly appealing variant of the modern Tank, it is to no one's surprise that this Europe-only edition was sold out immediately. A contemporary classic, the WGTA0121 remains one of the most interesting releases by Cartier in recent memory.
