Rolex Day-Date 1802 Matte Black
Featuring a factory-smooth domed bezel, matte black pie-pan dial, and a 18k yellow gold riveted Oyster bracelet, this reference 1802 sets itself apart within the Rolex Day-Date lineage.
This is the Rolex Day-Date reference 1802. Introduced in 1956, the Rolex Day-Date was conceived as the brand’s ultimate benchmark of prestige within the brand's catalogue and was the first timepiece to display both the day and the date on the dial. Traditionally associated with prestige, the Day-Date line was produced solely in precious metals with an option of a smooth or fluted bezel.
While the legendary reference 1803 is regarded as the quintessential vintage Day-Date, the reference 1802 stands in a category of its own. Produced in significantly smaller quantities throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the 1802 is distinguished by its factory-smooth, polished domed bezel. This subtle difference between a smooth and fluted bezel transforms the entire silhouette of the Day-Date aesthetic, setting the 1802 apart from the traditional and far more common 1803.
This particular 1802 is further elevated by the matte black pie-pan dial - a configuration that is far less common on early Day-Dates in comparison to the traditional silver and champagne dial - as well as a 18k riveted Oyster bracelet. Unlike the standard three-piece semi-circular link President bracelet typically paired with the Day-Date, the riveted Oyster features flat outer links secured by visible side rivets and folded construction, characteristic of Rolex's earlier mid-century sports and dress models.
While smooth-bezel Day-Dates are as uncommon as they come, finding an 1802 paired with a factory matte black dial and an 18k gold riveted Oyster bracelet makes this piece an extraordinary find for the serious vintage Rolex collector.
This Rolex Day-Date 1802 is in good vintage condition. The 18k yellow gold case retains even and well-defined lugs with clear hallmarks preserved on the underside of the lugs and clasp. The matte black pie-pan dial is clean with no signs of wear, featuring original luminous plots that are uniform and intact. The 18k gold riveted Oyster bracelet exhibits minimal stretch, retains its correct clasp, and comprises a total of 10 riveted links that will fit a wrist size up to 6.75". In between the lugs, the reference engraving remains legible but the serial is extremely faint. The watch does not come with any box or papers and is in full working order.
