Rolex GMT Master 16758 Root Beer
With a rich brown nipple dial, the 16758 GMT Master "Root Beer" is a delectable combination of utility and luxury.
This is the Rolex GMT-Master 16758. Introduced in the late 1970s, the GMT-Master line was originally developed in 1954 in collaboration with Pan American Airways for pilots to track multiple time zones during travel and has remained a staple of Rolex’s sports catalogue ever since.
A successor to the popular GMT reference 1675/8, the reference 16758 was introduced in approximately 1980 with several modern enhancements added to its vintage predecessor. The new reference came with a sapphire crystal, notable for its scratch-resistant qualities and an upgraded Cal. 3075 movement with a single quickset function. Serving as a transitional reference of sorts, the 16758 was eventually succeeded by the reference 16718 with its double quickset function.
Featuring the popular "Root Beer" dial configuration, this 16758 is fitted with the applied 18k hour markers known as the "nipple dial". Known as the "Root Beer" due to its warm and iridescent brown dial, the dial blends in with the yellow gold case seamlessly, allowing for a monochromatic aesthetic. The raised hour makers add a layer of depth to the dial, a feature distinct to several vintage references before the brand eventually phased it out in favour of flat hour markers.
While the GMT was a timepiece built for function, the Rolex GMT 16758 sets itself apart entirely with the combination of utility and luxury and remains a true favourite among vintage Rolex enthusiasts.
This Rolex GMT Master 16758 is in excellent vintage condition. The dial has no signs of age and the GMT hand is a lighter shade of tritium. There are some light scratches on the bezel and the case from prior wear without any dings or dents. The caseback remains in excellent condition with only light signs of wear and the hallmarks are still deep and legible on the lugs. The lugs remain in excellent condition with the original bevels still visible. The 8386 bracelet shows minimal stretch and has 20 links of which 3 are removable. The case engravings of the serial and reference are still highly legible. The watch comes accompanied with its original punched papers dating it to 1983 and is in full working order.
