A Lange & Sohne 1815 Up/Down 234.026

US$0.00
SOLD

Description

This is the A Lange & Sohne 1815 Up/Down reference 234.026. Founded by Adolf Lange in the German watchmaking town of Glashutte, Lange has a storied history. Post World War II, the company was actually nationalized, leading to their company’s disappearance from the late 1940s till 1989. Post the communists’ abandonment of a single party rule in Eastern Europe, Walter Lange managed to return to his origins in Germany and re-established the company. Lange is often thought of as a watchmaking powerhouse, with workmanship, finishing and quality rivalling the best of the Swiss counterparts like Patek Philippe.

The 1815 line was introduced in 1995, a year after the introudction of the Saxonia. Named after the birth year of Ferdinand Adolphe Lange, the 1815 line carries a distinctive resemblance to their pocket watches. Originally introduced in a smaller diameter of 35.9mm and a closed caseback, they soon changed to an open caseback to display the movement. The line was later modernized to a bigger case size with a stepped bezel, which is the reference that we have here, the 234.026 and utilises the Cal. L051.2 manual wind movement with the signature Up-Down power reserve indicator.

Lange, as a brand, has been undervalued for quite some time. As mentioned earlier, the quality of their timepieces are easily comparable to any of the holy trinity. With greater awareness in recent times, the brand has experienced somewhat of a renaissance, with rare and early pieces fetching record highs in auctions. This is not unexpected in the eyes of seasoned collectors who have always held the brand in high regard and rightfully so. I, for one, am pleased that a brand such as this is finally getting the recognition that it deserves.

Condition

This A Lange & Sohne 1815 Up/Down is in good pre-owned condition. The case has some hairline scratches from prior wear which are more pronounced on the highly-polished bezel, namely near the 3 and the 9’o clock. Both front and back sapphire crystals have no flaws and remain in perfect condition. It comes with the original strap and buckle as well as the original box and warranty. The watch is in full working order.
