Cartier Santos Dumont Ultra Thin 9605 "Paris"

US$0.00
SOLD

Description

This is the Cartier Santos Dumont reference 9605. Perhaps no other mainstream brand, save for independents, has experienced a renaissance quite like Cartier over the past 2 years. Once looked at as more of a fashion brand, Cartier has overtaken Omega as the second best-selling watch brand in the world. In my opinion, this revival was led by two reasons - the increased collectability of the Collection Privee and the rise of the classic models that represent the brand's DNA.

The story of the Santos Dumont began in 1904, when Louis Cartier’s good friend, Alberto Santos-Dumont, wanted a wristwatch to accompany him as he was flying, citing the impracticality of the then fashionable pocketwatch. In 1906, Alberto Santos Dumont was the first ever person filmed in a flight sporting the iconic Cartier watch that was designed by Louis Cartier and the rest, as they say, is history. Through all their innovations, the shape of the Santos remains evergreen and represents the brand as one of their flagship watches. For Cartier, the two most recognizable models are the Santos Dumont and the Tank.

The 9605 is a timeless and classic piece that is undeniably Cartier. The proportions of 27 x 36 renders it comfortably unisex and the thinness makes it a perfect dress piece. True to the original, this one has a “Paris” signed dial. Its base movement is the Frederic Piguet 21, which was once the thinnest movement in the world. Once overlooked, as with the brand, this classic Santos Dumont has experienced a resurgence in demand and is a great piece to have to begin, or complete, a Cartier collection.

Condition

This Cartier Santos Dumont 9605 is in good vintage condition. The case remains in good condition and has aged into a rosier colour resembling pink gold. All hallmarks and the serial is still clear on the caseback. The dial has some spidering near the 9 and 10 o’clock indices and the case is missing a screw near the 2. It also retains its original deployant buckle. The watch is in full working order.
