Omega "Apollo XVII 45th Anniversary" Speedmaster 311.30.42.30.03.001 NOS

US$0.00
SOLD

Description

This is the Omega “Apollo XVII 45th Anniversary” Speedmaster. Likely the model that’s most associated with the Omega brand, this iconic chronograph was introduced in 1957 as a sports and racing chronograph. Originally powered by the famous Calibre 321, the Omega Speedmaster was worn by astronauts on space missions as they needed a watch that could withstand the conditions of outer space and in 1964, only Omega’s Speedmaster passed the rigorous selection criteria.

The Apollo 17 45th Anniversary Speedmaster was released to commemorate Apollo 17 mission commander Gene Cernan - the last person to walk on the moon after final moon landing in 1972. It is thus befitting that Omega launched the model to commemorate the commander of the final mission who unfortunately passed away in the beginning of 20177.

Dressed in blue and gold, the 45th anniversary piece was based on the Omega Moonwatch with marked aesthetic improvements. For starters, the dial and bezel is a dark blue ceramic with applied gold markers. The subdial at the 9 features the official emblem of the Apollo 17 in white - an image of the Greek sun god Apollo. At the 12, there is a red “05.34 GMT” print, marking the final time that Gene Cernan, and anyone for that matter, walked on the Moon’s surface. On the caseback is an engraving of the Greek god Apollo alongside the tribute to Gene Cernan.

It’s refreshing to see Omega permutate with the design of the Speedmasters, especially for a watch with the provenance such as this one. While this reference often flies under the radar in comparison to their other limited editions, it is no doubt one of the more aesthetically bold and pleasing releases by the brand in modern times.

This Omega Apollo XVII 45th Anniversary Speedmaster is in new old stock condition and comes complete with a full set of box and warranty. The watch is in full working order.
