Patek Philippe Calatrava 5000R

US$0.00
SOLD

Description

This is the Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 5000R. Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe has always synonymous with high horology. A company that has always been privately owned, Patek has been manufacturing watches for almost two centuries without interruption. The company is currently owned by the Stern family, whose heritage dates back to when they were supplying dials to Patek in the 1920s. Incidentally, the Calatrava was also the first model released by the Stern family as the staple time-only watch in the brand’s collection.

To understand the Calatrava, one must hark back to the roots of the model with the reference 96. The first Calatrava was also the debut of the brand’s first in-hose caliber, the cal. 920. Produced over a 40-year span, the 96 would set the foundations of all future Calatravas. Dimunitive, minimalist and dressy, these characteristics would go on to define the future references within the line as the brand’s flagship dress piece. The reference 570 was released during the same period as the 96 with a larger case size, though the smaller case size was more favourable during that time period. Fundamentally, the idea was the same, spawning later variations such as the aforementioned 5000R.

The reference 5000R was introduced in 1992 during what is now-known as the neo-vintage era. It is highly distinctive due to the off-centre small seconds at the four that was more prevalent at the six o’clock position. With a classic pink on pink colour combination, the dial is encircled by a train-track style minutes indicator and adorned with applied Arabic numerals. At 33mm, the case is fairly small for modern preferences but with the long lugs forming a lug-to-lug width of 41.5mm, it wears bigger than its case size suggests. Turning the watch around, the sapphire caseback presents the in-house Cal. 240 with a 22k rotor bearing the Geneva seal.

While the 5000R may not be the most famous Calatrava reference, it certainly holds in own in being one of the more recognizable variants. Discreet and elegant, it’s no surprise that the Calatrava is synonymous with time-only dress watches as one of the most beloved models of its kind and serves as proof that timelessness need not be fancy.

Condition

This Patek Philippe 5000R is in good pre-owned condition. The dial is clean and both front and back crystals have no flaws. There are some hairlines on the case from prior wear with more pronounced scratches near the 9’o clock marker but no dings. The hallmarks on the caseback are clear and the lugs are thick and even. The watch retains its original strap and buckle with no box or papers and is in full working order.
