Rolex "Buckley" Datejust 16018

US$0.00

Description

This is the Rolex Datejust reference 16018. Originally released in 1945 as the world’s first automatic watch with a date function that switches at midnight, the Datejust has become highly recognizable and has evolved into the brand’s best selling dress model in the lineup.

The reference 16018 was the successor of the 4-digit 1601 which was then equipped with an acrylic crystal. With the introduction of the 16018 came several upgrades such as a sapphire crystal that was far more scratch-resistant than its predecessor as well as the Cal. 3035 movement with a quickset date function that enabled the wearer to change the date easily via the crown. The case is also 18k yellow gold as denoted by the last number “8” in the reference.

Another important aspect of this particular 16018 is that it houses a dial variant known as the Buckley. More commonly found on models dated between the 70s-80s, the Buckley is distinct due to its painted Roman numerals that have come to define the dial. Named after renowned New York-based vintage jeweller John Buckley who was a proponent of this dial variant at a time when it was less popular, the Buckley remains a beloved variant of the Datejust family.

Condition

This Rolex “Buckley” 16018 is in very good overall condition. The yellow gold case remains in good shape for its age with no dings and sharp and even lugs. The triple hallmarks are still clear on the back of the lugs while the bezel remains sharp. There are some noticeable hairlines on the inner lugs, likely from bracelet removal. Both reference and serial engravings are clear. There is some loss on the luminous plots. The dial remains in excellent condition with no signs of age and the serial dates it to circa 1987. The watch is in full working order.
