Sarpaneva x Moomin

US$0.00
SOLD

Description

This is the Sarpaneva x Moomin. By no means a household name, Stepan Sarpaneva paid his dues in renowned watchmaking school, WOSTEP, and stayed in Switzerland to work at household names such as Piaget, Parmigiani and Vianney Halter. At Parmigiani, notably, he worked with perhaps the only other well-known Finnish watchmaker, Kari Voutilainen. Following his stint in Switzerland, he started his eponymous brand, Sarpaneva, and a more affordable sister brand, S.U.F Helsinki, a year later.

Influenced heavily by nature and nocturnal views and generous use of luminous material, Sarpaneva watches are highly recognizable. The piece on offer combines Sarpaneva’s distinct aesthetic with another famous character, Moomin. This was launched as a follow-up to the successful S.U.F Helsinki x Moomin, which was introduced a year prior and had sold out immediately. With only 25 pieces each of 4 different handset variants, it’s to no one’s surprise that this 100-piece limited edition enjoyed the same fate.

Encased in high-grade Outokumpu steel, Sarpeneva’s rendition of Moomin is really a sight to behold with the image of Moomin in the foreground on a hand-painted superluminova canvas of 9 different colours. A key visual differentiator from its predecessor is the open-worked chapter ring with round hour markers. Turning the watch around, the modified Soprod A10 movement is visible through the open caseback, highlighted by the skeletonized stainless steel rotor with the brand’s trademark - a luminous face of the moon.

As far as watches go, the Sarpaneva x Moomin is definitely an unusual combination of playfulness backed by serious watchmaking. The fact that both S.U.F Helsinki and Sarpaneva’s Moomin sold out immediately is a testament of the brand’s watchmaking credentials. With a visually impressive dial fronted by a cartoon character, Stepan Sarpaneva’s rendition of the Moomin is an appealing reminder of the light-heartedness of youth and serves as a healthy dose of nostalgia on the wrist.
