Sartory Billard SB05

SOLD

Description

This is the Sartory Billard SB05. Born in 2015 by founders Armand Billard and Ludovic Sartory as a personal project to commemorate a milestone with the first SB01 while each holding a full-time job, the brand truly made a breakthrough in terms of commercial success with the release of the SB04 in 2020. A designer by trade with his own agency, Armand’s vision of the Sartory Billard brand was to put the consumer first rather than maximise profits and the brand’s watches are amongst the most affordable in the realm of customizable wristwatches. As a canvas with almost limitless possibilities, Sartory Billard has produced almost endless iterations of the SB04 and SB05, working hand-in-hand with the buyer to produce what is to each individual their ideal timepiece.

To produce the SB05, Sartory Billard leverages on the expertise of both Comblémine and Voutilainen & Cattin. Owned by industry legend Kari Voutilainen, Comblémine, in particular, is renowned for its artisanal dials. Powered by the respectable La Joux-Perret LJP7380 manual-wind movement, the result is a watch that truly exceeds the price point with a 20-part case, four-day power reserve and seemingly endless dial options.

With this in mind, each watch is highly personal given that Sartory Billard aims to produce a timepiece that represents an essence of the owner and the SB05 on offer is a true display of the brand’s ethos. Encased in titanium, the SB05 is well-proportioned with a wearable 38.5mm case and a comfortable lug-to-lug size of 45.5mm. The three-part Comblémine dial is adorned with alternating Korean numerals on a circular brushed blue outer track with aventurine as the choice for the central dial and small seconds at the six. As for the case, the construction is highly detailed for its price point, with each lug individually secured to the middle case using screws. The separation of the components allows for alternating surface finishes which is more commonly found on higher-end timepieces.

In a world where customization is becoming more and more mainstream, Sartory Billard stands out with its value proposition and the wide array of options for personalization. For better or for worse, no two pieces are identical. With Armand personally rendering all designs until the buyer is satisfied, the process to create a Sartory Billard from start to finish is a long but rewarding journey. While the designs may be highly specific and may not cater to everyone’s tastes, there’s something to be said about a customized watch with specifications well above its price point.
