This is the Audemars Piguet Ultra-Thin Cal. 2003. Founded in 1875 by Jules Louis Audemars and Edward August Piguet in Le Brassus, Audemars Piguet has overseen the introduction of some of the most important wristwatches in the history of horology, including the first minute-repeating wristwatch, the Grand Complication pocket watch and once held the record for the world’s thinnest automatic movement. Now famed for its Royal Oak, the brand remains among the most important and sought-after names in watch collecting.
Introduced by Audemars Piguet in 1953, the Cal. 2003 was developed jointly with Vacheron Constantin and Jaeger-LeCoultre based on the Cal. 9ML from 1938. The development of this ultra-thin movement was no mean feat given that it remained one of the thinnest mechanical movements in the world for the next 50 years. As testament to the calibre’s longevity and reliability, the movement was produced for five decades before being discontinued in 2003 and powering notable references like the Disco Volante along the way.
Housed in a white gold ultra-thin case, the Audemars Piguet on offer sets itself apart given its use of Breguet numerals and Breguet-style hands. Few, if any, can be found with this particular configuration since most are seen with stick hands and indices. While the dress pieces were largely overshadowed by the introduction of its flagship Royal Oak in 1972, the ultra-thin remained a staple of the brand’s lineup and are some of the most overlooked vintage pieces from Audemars Piguet.

This Audemars Piguet Ultra-Thin is in very good vintage condition. The case and lugs remain in excellent shape with minor signs of wear on the caseback. The serial remains highly legible. There are signs of aging at the edges of the dial. The watch comes with its original buckle only without any box or papers and is in full working order.
