This is the Heuer Carrera reference 2447N. Founded in 1860 by Edouard Heuer in Bern, Switzerland, the brand’s heritage has always been tied to applications in automobiles and aircrafts. Once the official timekeeper of the early Olympics, the brand became synonymous with the world of motor racing with its dashboard timers used specifically for motor racing events. In 1961, the first generation Autavia was introduced by Jack Heuer who joined the family business three years prior and the model was represented and is still linked to renowned Formula 1 drivers of the era.
In 1963, the brand launched what would be its most commercially successful chronograph of the time – the famous Heuer Carrera. Powered mostly by Valjoux movements which were popular at the time, the Carrera became the brand’s most recognizable chronograph at the time. Named after the Carrera Panamericana race in Mexico, the Heuer holds a striking resemblance to its more famous counterpart, the Rolex Daytona as both ran on Valjoux 72 movements featuring Singer dials.
With the many variations of the Heuer Carreras, the 2447N stands out as the foundation of the lineup. Featuring three sub-registers in a highly legible dial, the Carrera is housed in a 36mm steel case with distinctive angular lugs that would carry through to all subsequent variations of the model. The crystal is secured by the patented tension ring – a piece of metal holding the crystal in place allowing for greater water resistance. In addition, this particular 2447N is an early example with a silver script dial instead of the white script that was used in later examples which corresponds with the early serial number.
Even though it has been six decades since the introduction of the Carrera from Jack Heuer, the aesthetic of the reference is still relevant today with a watch that is equal parts charming and functional. While not as renowned as the Rolex Daytona, the Carrera is undoubtedly a formative chapter in the history of racing chronographs.

This Heuer Carrera 2447N is in very good vintage condition. There are hairline scratches throughout the case consistent with its age without any major dings or dents. The lugs remain thick and sharp and the caseback remains in good overall condition. The crown is correctly unsigned from this early example and the silver script shows no sign of degrading. The serial is still crisp between the lugs. The watch comes with a steel Heuer buckle but without any box or papers and is in full working order.
