Colloquially known as “the watchmaker’s watchmaker” for its watchmaking prowess, the brand has almost two centuries of watchmaking history with its most important and recognizable creation being the first reversible watch, the Reverso.

The story of the Reverso began in 1931, where Rene-Alfred Chauvot patented the creation of what would eventually become the brand’s most iconic and associated model. Dating back pre-JLC, the creation of the Reverso was originally meant for the sport of polo, with the reversible case acting as protection for the front. Throughout the years, there have been countless variations of the iconic JLC model since its first introduction in the early 20th century.

A staple of the brand in the 90s, the reference 250.3.86 was produced with several dial variations in varying case metals and in 1996, a little-known special edition of 65 pieces was introduced in white gold to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Reverso for the Japanese market.

Featuring a glacier blue dial with a sunburst effect with applied Arabic numerals in a unique font that departs from the regular Reverso numerals, this limited edition stylistically sets itself apart from others of the era. On the inside caseback, there is an engraving of the Swiss Alps to commemorate the brand’s origins with the limited edition engraving on the outer caseback as well as the two important years in relation to this watch – 1931 and 1996. A special variant that remains under the radar that seldom comes to market, this 65-piece Japan limited edition is truly a hidden gem.

This Reverso 250.3.86 is in very good overall condition. The white old case displays some hairlines consistent with its age with no dings or dents. The inner caseback remains in excellent condition with no signs of wear. The engraving as well as the hallmarks remain clear and legible. The outer caseback has some hairlines with the engravings deep and legible. The dial has some signs of age near the 9 and 11 o’clock markers. The watch comes accompanied with its original box and instruction manual without the original guarantee and is in full working order.
