This is the Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso “Bleu” Boutique edition reference 278.8.54. A manufacturer synonymous with its flagship model, the Reverso, JLC is a storied brand with a long and rich history in watchmaking. Colloquially known as “the watchmaker’s watchmaker” for its watchmaking prowess, the brand has almost two centuries of watchmaking history with its most important and recognizable creation being the first reversible watch, the Reverso.

The story of the Reverso began in 1931, where Rene-Alfred Chauvot patented the creation of what would eventually become the brand’s most iconic and associated model. Dating back pre-JLC, the creation of the Reverso was originally meant for the sport of polo, with the reversible case acting as protection for the front. Throughout the years, there have been countless variations of the iconic JLC model since its first introduction in the early 20th century.

A special boutique edition inspired by the blue dial variation from the original in the 1930s, the 278.8.54 sets itself apart with the vintage-inspired single “Reverso” signature on the blue lacquer dial in the same font as the original. Designed to commemorate the brand’s 180th anniversary, the special edition is housed in the brand’s signature Grande Reverso ultra-thin case. On the reverse side, the second time zone is displayed on a white dial with a clous de Paris guilloche finish and features a day and night indicator at the six.

Released as part of a series of special boutique editions with the Rouge and the London Edition, it is unknown why the series was discontinued despite its popularity. A modern interpretation of a vintage collectible, the Boutique “Bleu” edition pays fitting tribute to an icon and remains an underrated reference that is often lost among the bevy of modern Reversos.

This Grande Reverso Duoface Blue Boutique Edition is in good pre-owned condition. There are hairlines on the case from prior wear and a small ding on the bottom right lug. The insides of the lugs have hairlines from strap changes in the past. The caseback has some light hairlines but the engravings remain deep and legible. Both dials have no signs of age and the crystals are flawless. The set includes the original box, warranty dated 2014, manuals and JLC strap removal tool. The watch is in full working order.
