This is the Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 3923R. Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is a name synonymous with high horology. A company that has always been privately owned, Patek has been manufacturing watches for almost two centuries without interruption. The company is currently owned by the Stern family, whose heritage dates to when they were supplying dials to Patek in the 1920s. Incidentally, the Calatrava was also the first model released by the Stern family as the staple time-only watch in the brand’s collection.
To understand the Calatrava, one must revisit the roots of the model with the reference 96. The first Calatrava was also the debut of the brand’s first in-house caliber, the cal. 920. Produced over a 40-year span, the 96 would set the foundations of all future Calatravas. Dimunitive, minimalist and dressy, these characteristics would go on to define the future references within the line as the brand’s flagship dress piece. The reference 570 was released during the same period as the 96 with a larger case size, though the smaller case size was more favourable during that period. The success of the early Calatravas laid the fundamentals of the brand’s most famous dress watch and it is from this foundation that the 3919 was born in 1985.
Originally introduced by the brand in 1986, the reference 3923 was produced for approximately 13 years until its discontinuation in 1999. A contemporary counterpart to the famous reference 96, the 3923 features a 31.5mm case that harks back to Calatravas of the past. While considered by many as small for the modern standards, the case size is wholly appropriate as a descendant of the early Patek Philippe dress watches.
Powered by the reliable cal. 215 S manual winding calibre, the reference was mainly produced in yellow or rose gold with the occasional limited-edition collaborations during its lifetime. In addition, while most 3923s feature a dial with a brushed finish, this piece features an ivory dial that resembles enamel dials of the past. The dial is further complemented by rose gold applied indices and rose gold hands denoted by the sigma signature at the six. A combination of traditional proportions with modern aesthetics, the 3923 remains one of the neo-vintage references that truly embodies the spirit of the original 96.

This Patek Philippe 3923R is in excellent pre-owned condition. The dial remains free of wear and the case shows only few signs of wear in the form of light hairlines from prior use. The hallmarks on the lugs are still deep and legible and the caseback remains in excellent overall condition. The watch comes with its original strap and buckle without box or papers and is in full working order.
