This is the Patek Philippe Ellipse reference 3730. Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is a name synonymous with high horology. A company that has always been privately owned, Patek has been manufacturing watches for almost two centuries without interruption. The company is currently owned by the Stern family, whose heritage dates back to when they were supplying dials to Patek in the 1920s.
The first Ellipse was introduced by the brand in 1968, with the original reference 3548 being coined the “Golden Ellipse”. A distinctive model characterized by the elliptical case shape accompanied by either an integrated bracelet or an accompanying leather strap, the Ellipse brought about a new era for the brand in the dress watch catalogue that provided an alternative to the iconic Calatrava. Conceived by the Jean-Daniel Rubeli, the Ellipse is a classic example of form over function with the application of the golden ratio – an aesthetically pleasing proportion of 1:1.618 based on a 15th century study by Luca Pacioli with roots from ancient Greek mathematicians and the 3730, among others, is a result of the golden ratio’s application in design.
Housed in a yellow gold case, the 3730 features a distinctive stepped bezel with dauphine-style hands. As with the Ellipses, there in an absence of traditional style lugs to allow for a geometrically harmonious aesthetic. Powered by the manually wound Cal. 215 stamped with the Geneva Seal, the highlight of the watch is undoubtedly the Onyx stone dial with a matching Onyx cabochon on the crown. It is worth noting that only a handful of 3730s have come to market and it appears that the reference was produced predominantly with either Onyx or Lapis Lazuli stone dials.
While it has been documented that there have only been eight known pieces in this configuration, there is no definitive way to confirm this. Regardless, this truly shows how few have actually come to market since its introduction in 1976. A design that is as relevant fifty years ago as it is today, the 3730 is the perfect embodiment of elegance and aesthetic purity.
