This is the Vacheron Constantin 6484. Founded in 1755 by Jean-Marc Vacheron at a tender young age of 24, Vacheron Constantin is the world’s oldest continually operating watch manufacturer. A rich history of producing quality of the highest standards, the brand has undoubtedly been one of the most resilient as well, surviving both world wars and many other historical events along the way.
Originally renowned for producing pocket watches with the highest level of engineering and artistry, the brand opened its first boutique in Geneva during the early 20th century and started producing wristwatches during the 1940s. Often characterized by the fancy lugs and guilloche dials, the brand’s identity was often tied to its elegance and creativity and it is from this period of the mid-20th century that the 6484 was born.
A classically sized dress watch, the reference 6484 is housed in a pink gold 34mm case. The dial has a light linen-style finish surrounded by baton indices with the brand’s signature at the 12 and a crosshair-style subseconds at the 6 that was typical of its peers during that era. Featuring inward sloping lugs with fixed inserts, the reference is powered by the Vacheron Constantin Cal. 453 with the subseconds function based on the Jaeger-LeCoultre’s cal. 450 stamped with the Geneva seal.
While the reference 6484 may not be the most well-known reference, it is certainly a quintessential representation of the brand during that era. While seemingly simple in design, the quality, finishing and elegance of the 6484 truly aligned with the brand’s unwavering identity.
