This is the Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 5026P. Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is a name synonymous with high horology. A company that has always been privately owned, Patek has been manufacturing watches for almost two centuries without interruption. The company is currently owned by the Stern family, whose heritage dates back to when they were supplying dials to Patek in the 1920s. Incidentally, the Calatrava was also the first model released by the Stern family as the staple time-only watch in the brand’s collection.
To understand the Calatrava, one must revisit the roots of the model with the reference 96. The first Calatrava was also the debut of the brand’s first in-house caliber, the cal. 920. Produced over a 40-year span, the 96 would set the foundations of all future Calatravas. Dimunitive, minimalist and dressy, these characteristics would go on to define the future references within the line as the brand’s flagship dress piece.
Best described as a modernized and quirky variant of the 96 with a case size considered diminutive by modern standards, the 5026 was produced for a total of 5 years from 1997 to 2002. During this short production period, several variants were introduced including a millennium four-piece set in 2001. This particular 5026P incorporates the desirable applied Breguet numerals in silver which blends perfectly into the grey dial. Featuring a small-seconds subdial at the four carried over from the reference 5000, the detail renders the dial distinctly modern. In addition, the platinum makes this reference all the more interesting as the metal is often reserved for the least produced and most expensive timepieces.
Running on the Cal. 240 originally introduced in 1977 to power the Golden Ellipse, the movement can be appreciated through the sapphire caseback and the calibre, in its various forms, continues to be used in some of the brand’s modern offerings as a testament to its longevity.
While the 5026 may not be regarded as the quintessential Calatrava, its certainly holds its own in being one of the more recognizable and modern variants. The reference represents an evolution in a line that has retained its traditional aesthetics up till then. Unorthodox and distinct, the 5026 may not be a reference that caters to the purists but is undoubtedly a refreshing take on the brand’s attempt to evolve and modernize a staple dress watch in its lineup.
