Vacheron Constantin 222 Mid-Size 46003

Description

This is the Vacheron Constantin 222 reference 46003. Founded in 1755, Vacheron Constantin is the world’s oldest continually operating watch manufacturer. The purveyor of the world’s most complicated wristwatch, Vacheron has a rich history of producing quality of the highest standards. Undoubtedly one of the most resilient as well, the brand has survived both world wars and many other historical events along the way and continues to be one of the most celebrated watchmakers today.

Though Vacheron Constantin is the third member of the “Holy Trinity” alongside Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe, few people know about the brand’s first integrated bracelet sports watch - the 222. Often mistaken for a Gerald Genta design due to its similarities to the Genta counterparts of the aforementioned brands, the 222 is the work of Jörg Hysek and while reminiscent of the other two integrated sports watches of that era, it is unmistakably different with the tounneau-shaped case and hexagon-linked bracelet.

Highly identifiable by the integrated bracelet, Maltese cross and notched bezel, the 222 was first introduced by the brand in 1977 to mark its anniversary. Available in three sizes with the 37mm “jumbo” being the most desirable in today’s context, the model was produced for a total of eight years. It is documented that the total number of the 222 was approximately 3,000 pieces, out of which a third was the mid-size reference 46003.

The renewed attention on Vacheron Constantin has brought about a revival in interest on the brand and its vintage models in particular. Once an overlooked reference, the 222 has become among the most desirable vintage sports watches in recent times given its place in the history of the brand as well as the low production numbers. Given that Vacheron re-issued a modern-day 222 in yellow gold that is almost entirely faithful to the vintage model in a modern case size to critical acclaim, it is safe to say that this important reference is no longer just an afterthought.

Condition

This Vacheron Constantin 46003 is in fair vintage condition. There are two dings on the caseback as well as some light dings on the integrated bracelet. There are hairlines on the case from prior wear but retains its factory chamfers and remains in good shape. The dial and crystal is clean with no flaws. Some luminous material is missing from the indices. The bezel has some hairlines but no dings or dents. The serial number is clear on the caseback and the caseback reference engraving is deep. The bracelet has six removable links and will comfortably fit a wrist of 6.75”. The watch is in full working order.
